BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

We hear so much of what’s wrong in the world, we’d like to express our profound gratitude to our community and to our Recreation Department for much of what is right in the world.

Our son, Thomas, was born with cerebral palsy. Though his coordination, walking and running are labored, he has participated in baseball and soccer through the Orono Recreation Department. Spectators of the games cheer especially loudly when he hits a ball in baseball or boots a head ball in soccer. Volunteer coaches have been masterly in their encouragement of our child, and in modeling such for their young team members. Children frequently run up to us to announce with delight, “Thomas made a home run!” or “Thomas made two hits!” During one baseball game, a first baseman on the opposing team helped him to reach the base, refusing to tag his friend whose stride length prevented him from reaching the base on time.

Our hearts are warmed by the support and continuing encouragement of community, Recreation Department and team members. Carolyn and Alfred Leick Orono
