Bears claim the consolation prize

MUNCIE, Ind. – Ken Barnes scored 16 points, including two on an offensive rebound as time expired, lifting the University of Maine men’s basketball team to an 84-82 victory over Western Illinois in the consolation game of the Cardinal Classic at Ball State here Saturday.

South Carolina State, after defeating Maine on Friday night, won the championship Saturday with a 70-64 decision over Ball State.

Western Illinois had furiously fought back from an eight-point deficit with 2:33 left in the game, tying the contest before Barnes, a 6-foot-6 junior forward, tipped in a Casey Arena miss to give Maine its first victory of the season.

Maine’s 6-8 senior forward Francois Bouchard tossed in 25 points and snared a career-high 21 rebounds to lead the 1-2 Black Bears and was named All Tournament. Sophomore point guard Arena added 13 points and eight assists for the Black Bears.

Western Illinois, 0-3, got 21 points from Garrick Vicks and 19 from Patrick Orlando.

After trailing by one point midway through the second half, Maine built an 80-72 lead with 2:33 left in the contest. Bouchard tallied 10 points and Arena seven during the Bears’ 26-17 run.

Western Illinois battled back, going on a 10-2 run to tie the game on Chris Boller’s 3-pointer with 10 seconds left.

The Bears put the ball into play and Arena drove to the hoop for the game-winning attempt. The shot missed, but Barnes was there to tip it in at the buzzer

Maine out-rebounded Western Carolina 50-31 with a 23-8 advantage off the offensive glass. The Black Bears showed improvement at the foul line. They scored on 17 of 27 chances. South Carolina State won the tournament over Ball State 70-64. South Carolina had beat Maine to make it to the championship round.

UMPI sweeps

At Presque Isle, the host UM-Presque Isle Owls posted two victories over the weekend, running their win streak to four games and their record to 5-2.

Chris Casavant was the top scorer in both games, netting 25 points in Sunday’s 113-66 victory over Lyndon State and tallying 23 points in a 65-47 win over UM-Machias on Saturday.

In Sunday’s game, Joel Peterson added 17 points while Glenn Sharp had 12 for the winners. Simon Mitchell dished out 10 assists for the winners.

Lyndon State was led by Chris Wheelock’s 16 points.

In Saturday’s game, Mitchell had 12 to complement Casavant’s effort.

P.J. Bristol led the UMM Clippers with 11 points.

At Fort Kent on Sunday, Dave Warman had 19 points for UM-Fort Kent, including five 3-pointers, while Loren Guy had 18 to lead the Warriors to the victory.

Barry Shrambam was the high scorer of the game with 23 points. Ulysess Chatman had 17 and Ralph Hirtle had 16 points for Machias.
