Blodgett powers Bulldogs to easy victory over Indians

FAIRFIELD – Cindy Blodgett poured in 39 points as the Lawrence Bulldogs opened defense of their state Class A girls basketball championship with a 73-44 victory over Skowhegan Friday night.

Blodgett also pulled down nine rebounds, made eight steals, and handed out six assists.

Wendy Atwood added 11 points and made six steals to complement Blodgett’s effort.

For the Indians, Jess Laney totaled 19 points and Nicole Searles posted 10.

At Newport, Betsy Buker scored 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, during a 20-8 second-quarter run to lead the host Warriors to a season-opening win over Hampden.

Buker finished with 15 points on the night. Leading Nokomis was Kelly Bowman, who had 19 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Laura Grumbach added 13 points.

For Hampden, Eryn Leavitt scored 20 points and snared 16 rebounds.

Georges Valley connected on only one of 10 free-throw attempts in the fourth quarter as Lincoln Academy rallied from six points behind.

Andrea York led the winners with 14 points.

Mia Lombardo scored 24 points for Georges Valley.
