UM players, coaches gain field hockey honors

The University of Maine field hockey team continues to receive recognition in the wake of its outstanding fall season.

Junior goalkeeper Mary Lou Winstel, Coach Terry Kix and junior midfielder Michelle Gallan have all received postseason honors.

Winstel, from Berlin, N.J., was named to the All-Northeast Regional first team and also earned third-team All-America accolades. She has previously been named the All-North Atlantic Conference goalie.

Winstel and Black Bears assistant coach Diane Madl have been invited to try out for the United States Elite Team. That session is scheduled for Dec. 27 at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Kix, in her third year as the Black Bears’ boss, was voted the Northeast Co-Coach of the Year by her peers, sharing the honor with Massachusetts coach Pam Hixon. Kix had previously been named the North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year after leading Maine to an 11-6-1 record and its first NAC Tournament appearance.

Junior midfielder Michelle Gallan of South Paris was tapped for the All-Northeast Regional second team. She was Maine’s leading scorer with seven goals and two assists. – – –

Former Dexter High School golf, basketball and tennis standout Justin Alfond, now a senior at Noble and Greenough School in Dedham, Mass., has signed an NCAA national letter of intent to play golf at Tulane University next fall.

Alfond, grandson of former Dexter Shoe Company majority owner Harold Alfond, has been awarded a full athletic scholarship. The younger Alfond learned the game at Waterville Country Club and at the Dexter Municipal Golf Course.

Alfond has played three years of soccer, basketball and golf at Noble and Greenough. – – –

Neile Joler, a junior at St. Joseph’s College in Standish, has been named an All-America Scholar-Athlete by the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics.

Only 51 athletes were selected for this honor.

Joler, a striker from Fort Kent, boasts a 3.9 cumulative grade point average and is majoring in mathematics. Joler, who scored seven goals and had two assists this fall for the 12-4-2 Lady Monks, is the program’s No. 2 all-time scorer. – – –

Amy Brunner of Walpole, a senior co-captain and goalkeeper at Bates College of Lewiston, has been named the Intercollegiate Soccer Association of America/Addidas USA National Division III Goalkeeper of the Year.

Brunner set six records at Bates, including saves in a season (128), career saves (466), career save percentage (.917), fewest career goals allowed (42), most career shutouts (26.75) and career winning percentage (.779).

She also has been named to the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association Division III Brine All-New England second team and the Maine Soccer Coaches Women’s Collegiate All-Star Team. – – –

All-American swimmer Belinda Perry of Brewer was named the outstanding swimmer at the recent Union College Invitational.

Perry, a senior at Springfield College, won the 200 individual medley, the 400 individual medley and 200 butterfly, setting pool records in each. She also took first in the 200 backstroke and the 100 backstroke while swimming a leg in the Maroons’ winning 400-medley relay team. – – –

Cindy Sirois of Madawaska, a forward at Springfield College, has been named to the New England Division III Women’s Soccer All-Star first team and the 1993 Northeast-10 Conference Women’s Soccer All-Star first team. The junior co-captain led the 5-7-3 Maroons in scoring with seven goals and four assists. – – –

Nate McCaul, a first-year welding student at Eastern Maine Technical College in Bangor, is one of three local soccer players selected as National Small College Conference All-Americans.

McCaul, a fullback from Huntington, Mass., is joined by forward Chris Iller of Unity College and forward Blake Lindstedt of the University of Maine-Fort Kent.
