Middlebury holds off Colby 17-14

WATERVILLE – Bill Lazzaro rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown as Middlebury pulled out a 17-14 college football win over Colby Saturday.

Middlebury (1-1) jumped to an early 14-0 lead, but needed a 23-yard Mike Frissora field goal in the third quarter to provide the winning margin.

Colby (0-2) had a chance to tie on the game’s final play, but a 55-yard field goal attempt by John Goss fell short.

The Mules outgained Middlebury 314 to 306 in total yards and were led by Aaron Stepka, who rushed for 146 yards and a touchdown.

Tufts 27, Bates 0

MEDFORD, Mass. – Matt Cerne had three catches for 100 yards and a touchdown Saturday as Tufts shut out its second straight opponent.

Tufts (2-0) broke a scoreless tie with 38 seconds left in the first half when Scott Treacy connected with Cerne for an 84-yard touchdown reception.

Bates (0-2), which lost for the 17th consecutive time to Tufts, only reached Tufts’ 40-yard line twice.

Amherst 42, Bowdoin 20

BRUNSWICK – Marsh Moseley threw for three touchdowns and ran for another as Amherst rolled over Bowdoin on Saturday.

Amherst (2-0) took a 20-14 lead on J.P. Zito’s 31-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter and led the rest of the way.

Bowdoin (0-2) cut Amherst’s lead to 28-20 midway through the third quarter when Matt Boyd scored from 1 yard out, but the Polar Bears could get no closer.

Amherst rushed for 297 yards, led by Fletcher Ladd’s 193 yards on 20 carries.
