SOUTH PORTLAND – Fairchild Semiconductor International is laying off 80 employees in Maine and 250 at its facilities worldwide, company officials said.
Company spokeswoman Fran Harrison said sales have been hurt by the sluggish global economy. The company recently revised downward its third-quarter revenue expectations.
“The bottom line is this is another example of the issues in the global economy, and Fairchild is not immune to them,” Harrison said.
Harrison said employees who are losing their jobs will receive severance packages ranging from three weeks to one year of pay based on the length of their employment.
Fairchild, based in South Portland, has more than 10,000 employees worldwide who design, manufacture and market computer chips for communications, computing, consumer, industrial and automotive products.
