MACHIAS — The annual Washington County law enforcement meeting, from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, in the county court- house building in Machias, will mark the beginning of a full day of business for county commis- sioners.
Washington County Sheriff John B. Crowley will lead the opening discussion with a presentation of his annual report on activities performed by his department in 1993. His report will include a town-by-town breakdown of complaints and incidents to which deputies responded.
Information provided by Crowley will also include activities at the Washington County jail, including inmate counts and transfers during 1993.
The annual meeting has, in recent years, fluctuated in attracting participants from state and municipal law enforcement departments within the county. Discussion often centers on budget and staffing restrictions and often acts as a barometer for future budget requests by the sheriff’s department.
From 2 to 3 p.m. County Treasurer Sonia Mallar is scheduled to present an updated report on the county’s financial status. Commis- sioners will conduct a tax abatement appeal hearing involving a Steuben property owner and the town of Steuben from 3 to 4 p.m.
Business to be conducted beginning at 4 p.m. includes a discussion and possible decision on a policy for fingerprinting new employees with the sheriff’s department; a decision on the Jan. 5 Brooks vs. Addison tax abatement appeal hearing; and an update on plans to replace the copier machine in the Emergency Management Agency.
