Brewer Day brings many activities

BREWER – Mayor Michael Celli’s vision of re-establishing a day filled with festivities for Brewer residents has shaped up into the Brewer Day Hometown Celebration set for 7 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 5, at Brewer Auditorium and Doyle Field.

Parks and Recreation Director Ken Hanscom said that organizing the event, which last was held in 1991, has been a learning curve for everyone. He said Celli was the driving force behind the celebration.

“Brewer has made exciting headway in economic development recently – Wal-Mart and Eastern Maine Healthcare,” Celli said, “but it’s very important to keep in mind that Brewer is a small town. The celebration is a way to keep that small-town atmosphere.”

Hanscom said organizers hope to expand the event to two days next year.

The Brewer Day Hometown Celebration is sponsored in part by the Brewer Federal Credit Union, Brewer Kiwanis Club, Brewer Key Club, Brewer Shop ‘n Save, Cumulus Broadcasting, Wal-Mart, Bradstreet Lawn & Garden, Maine Oxy and The Weekly.

“I think the most exciting thing will be to watch the Brewer City Council cook breakfast,” Celli said. “I don’t know about anyone else, but I plan to have a blast.”
