Clark House art show

Clark House Gallery has announced a new show, “Into the Woods,” which has been a year in the making, gallery owner Susan Maasch said. The show features Maine artists Neil Welliver, June Grey, Gaylen Morgan, Ed Nadeau, Dennis Pinette and Squidge Liljeblad.

“The artists’ work creates a feeling of being enveloped by the mystery of the deep Maine woods,” said Maasch.

“Some of Neil Welliver’s pieces in the show are color woodcuts made with multiple rubbings. Others are etching with aquatint,” she said. “An animal theme runs through the show – Welliver’s etchings feature a deer and a bear, and Ed Nadeau’s new oil paintings depict ravens and a wolf. Squidge Liljeblad also represents the animal kingdom with several ceramic sculptures of raven figures.”

Gaylen Morgan’s large black-and-white Iris prints, and June Grey’s and Dennis Pinette’s new paintings explore the intriguing landscape of the deep woods, Maasch said.

The opening reception is 5-7:30 p.m. Thursday Oct. 3. Sushi and wine will be served.

The show runs from Oct. 2 through Nov. 23. The gallery is located at 128 Hammond St. in downtown Bangor. Gallery hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday.

Private appointments to see “Into the Woods” are available weekends, Mondays, Tuesdays and evenings. For information call, 942-9162.

Shoe store opening

BANGOR – Lamey-Wellehan held the grand opening of its sixth footwear store Sept. 14. Three Maine shoemakers, Roger Dufault from Sebago, Carroll LeBlanc from New Balance and Linda Milligan from SAS, were on hand to cut the ribbon for the opening.

Peter Lacy serves as store manager and buyer. Jack Silberman is women’s and children’s buyer, and general merchandise manager. Don Stowell is men’s buyer and operations manager.

Bangor Mayor Michael Crowley, Linda Haytek of the United Way and Candace Guerette of the Bangor Chamber of Commerce also participated in ribbon cutting ceremony. Crowley gave special pens to the crew and a woodblock illustration of Bangor City Hall to the company.

Officials said that Lamey-Wellehan is a strong supporter of local business, and they were, and they were delighted to have Maine shoemakers take an honored role.

Honored guests at the event included Jack and Connie Kelsey, owners of Standard Shoe, which served northern Maine for many years.

WKIT put on a radio remote and nearly 700 people visited the store during the day. The Thomas School of Dance provided entertainment, ranging from Gaelic dancing to modern jazz to original choreography.

Amber Wilson, a local juggler, displayed her talent. Hannah Maddocks, Michelle Manning and Ashley Stuart painted faces, and the crowd enjoyed the Velcro bounce wall. Roger Default demonstrated how to hand-sew shoes.

Officials said that Lamey-Wellehan would contribute 10 percent of the day’s sales to the United Way of Eastern Maine.

The 7,300-square-foot store, with a separate New Balance department, is located on Bangor Mall Boulevard.
