Valeriani’s OT goal lifts USM

GORHAM – Amanda Valeriani scored the game-winning goal with five seconds remaining in overtime Thursday to lift the University of Southern Maine to a 2-1 women’s soccer victory over Colby College of Waterville.

It was the Huskies’ second win of the season (2-6) and their first victory over the White Mules since September 1991, ending a nine-match losing slide.

Valeriani forced the overtime with a goal with 33 seconds remaining in regulation. Erin Garland assisted on that goal, and Rene Martin on the game-winner. Marcy Ansley came up with five saves on 11 shots.

Christine O’Donnell registered a second-half unassisted goal for 2-4 Colby of Waterville. Elizabeth Riley made nine saves on 29 shots.

Women’s Soccer

Bates 6, U-New England 0

At Lewiston, Katie Carroll racked up three goals and Kathleen Nugent four assists plus a goal as the Bobcats rolled past the Nor’Easters.

Jenna Benson and Bebecca Dessain provided a goal each for Bates. Kim Martell and Emily Fisken combined to make seven saves on nine shots.

Jayne Tarkleson and Becky Roy combined on an 17 save, 26 shot effort for U-New England of Biddeford.

Men?s soccer

Nichols 3, St. Joseph?s 2

At Standish, Ibrahima Kourouma scored the game-winner 49 seconds into overtime as the Bison rallied past the Monks.

Tom Mann and Jesse Plouffe each scored a second-half goal as 4-8 Nichols came back from a two-goal deficit. Theodore Dronis made seven saves on 17 shots.

Chris Willer netted two goals for 2-6 St. Joseph?s and Jeff Yaeger stopped two of 12 shots.
