Blodgett sets scoring record

LAWRENCE – Cindy Blodgett became the all-time leading point scorer in Maine high school basketball history as the Bulldogs rolled to a 101-56 schoolgirl basketball win over the Gardiner Tigers Tuesday night.

Blodgett scored the record-breaking point with 7:58 left in the second quarter on a drive to the basket in what became a three-point play.

Blodgett now has 2,332 career points. She scored her 1,500th, 2,000th, and 2,307th – the record-breaker – all against Gardiner. Vinalhaven’s Ray Alley held the previous record of 2,306.

Blodgett finished with 41 points, Wendy Atwood added 20, and Jill Atwood contributed 16.

Tamye Quinn paced Gardiner with 21 points.

At Bangor’s Red Barry Gym, Matt Kinney scored the go-ahead basket off an inbounds play in the final 20 seconds as Bangor won the battle of the Rams.

Danny Dahl lead Bangor with 21 points, while teammate Nat Clark added 14 points and 15 rebounds.

Jason Eastman and John Gasnik paced Cony with 10 points each.

At Caribou, led by Matt Cassavant’s eight points, the Presque Isle Wildcats outscored rival Caribou 24-14 in the fourth quarter to take the win.

Tate McPherson led Presque Isle with 24 points, while Tom McKellar scored seven of his 20 during the final period, and Casavant finished with 15.

Chris Funk paced the Vikings with 19 points, Erik Salminen scored 13 and Brett Doody added 12.

At Old Town, the host Indians stayed close for three quarters, but Darren Meader and Jason Achorn combined for 21 fourth-quarter points as Waterville denied the upset bid.

Meader finished with 27 for the Purple Panthers, while Achorn scored all of his 16 points in the second half. Mike Hamel added 13 for the winners.

Chris Hashey led Old Town with 16. Greg Thibodeau and Shane McCannell tosed in 13 each.
