Unity man announces District 110 candidacy

UNITY — Rodney W. McElroy of Unity has announced he is a candidate for the Maine House of Representatives for District 110, which consists of the towns of Burnham, Freedom, Knox, Liberty, Montville, Palermo, Thorndike, Troy and Unity.

“I am deeply concerned about local property taxes and the potentially devastating effect changes in the school funding formula could have on our area,” McElroy. “State funding has been declining over the past few years. A change in the formula to benefit wealthier towns will only hurt us more.”

McElroy said he also was compelled to run for the House of Representatives out of concern for the environment and the criminal justice system.

McElroy served as superintendent of schools for SAD 3 and counselor and principal at Mount View School in Thorndike. He has served as school superintendent for Vocational Region 7 and a teacher in Brownville and Lincoln.

At Great Northern Paper Co. he developed a competency-based trades training program that integrated the interests of union members and management.

McElroy has served on the Unity Budget Committee, Planning Board and Comprehensive Plan Committee. He is a member of the Regional Recycling Board and is a representative to the Congress of Lake Associations.

A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, McElroy graduated from the University of Maine, where he specialized in town and city management and education, and Patten Academy.

McElroy was born in Wytopitlock. He grew up in Patten, Maine and Snohomish, Wash. He and his wife, Gloria, live in Unity. They have four grown sons.
