Windjammers waiting to deal with Fort Kent

Just when the Camden-Rockport Windjammers get rid of one 3-point shooting team, another one waits in the wings.

Coach Jeff Hart’s top-ranked Windjammers shut down the long-range shooting of Bucksport’s scrappy Golden Bucks en route to an 81-71 victory in Saturday’s nightcap of the Eastern Maine Class B quarterfinals.

Up next, however, is the Fort Kent Warriors – a team that relies on its long-range game even more than the Bucks.

The Warriors used a furious last-minute rally, taking advantage of three mistakes by the Ellsworth Eagles while posting a 69-66 victory.

The two teams will meet at 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in an B semifinal.

In the nightcap, No. 1 Cam-Rock, now 17-2, used its superior depth on offense and extended its defense outward to shut down Bucksport.

Ben Laukka led all scorers with 25 points for the ‘Jammers while Mike Geisler added 20. Corey Staples chipped in with 11 more while Dale Landrith had nine points, nine rebounds and five blocked shots.

“We wanted to make our depth a factor, and I thought we did that,” said Hart. “We got off to a good start, but they’re a bunch of battlers. We knew they were coming back, and I like the way our effort was there all night long.”

After the Windjammers jumped to a 12-1 lead, Bucksport battled back to within 27-24 midway through the second quarter. The Bucks stayed within striking distance until the closing minutes of the third when an 8-0 run turned a 51-44 C-R lead into a 59-44 advantage.

The Windjammers made sure the 11-9 Bucks would not use the 3-point shot to battle back.

“We wanted to be out on them on the 3’s,” said Hart. “They get a lot of energy off that. I don’t think they had too many good looks at the hoop from the 3-point line.”

In the afternoon game, sixth-ranked Ellsworth was up 62-57 with 2:31 left before collapsing and letting the third-seeded Warriors steal the game.

Corey Thibodeau scored from the post as the Warriors cut the lead to 62-59. Following an Ellsworth turnover, Ryan Martin sank two free throws to cut the lead to one.

Ellsworth pushed the lead back to three when Matt Newman converted on a fastbreak layup, off a good feed from Dana Hodgkins, with 1:15 remaining. The Eagles would not score again until a last-second basket by Hodgkins.

Meanwhile, Chad Boucher hit a 12-footer and, as Ellsworth tried to bring the ball up the floor, Martin stole a pass and finished the layup to give the Warriors the lead with 49 seconds left.

Ellsworth had a chance to retake the lead, but Marc Leclerc missed two free throws.

On the other end, Fort Kent’s Matt Thibodeau was fouled and went to the line for a one-and-one with 29 seconds left. He missed, but Corey Thibodeau snuck in, grabbed the offensive rebound and scored on the put-back, pushing Fort Kent’s lead to 67-64 with 26 seconds left.

Ellsworth then threw the ball away, and Laughn Berthiaume, who scored a game-high 26 points and tied a Class B tournament record by scoring five 3-pointers in a game, sank two free throws to ice it for Fort Kent.

Corey Thibodeau added 10 points for the winners, now 14-5.

Hodgkins had 15 for Ellsworth, 9-10. Newman and LeClerc added 14 and 13, respectively. Marc Merritt dished out six assists.
