‘Cats hand Bears 12th straight loss

FRESNO, Calif. – Jeff Abbott went four-for-four, including a homer and two doubles, and Mark Etter homered and drove in three runs as the University of Kentucky pounded out 17 hits Wednesday to deal the University of Maine Black Bears their 12th straight loss, 11-3, in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic at Fresno State University.

Maine, which had been clubbed by host Fresno State 10-1 on Tuesday night, saw its record fall to 1-14, 0-3 in the tournament. The losing streak is one of the longest for Maine in recent memory. Kentucky is 11-4 and 2-1.

Maine will play again Thursday, but the time and opponent were yet to be determined.

Etter’s two-run homer keyed a six-run fifth inning that broke open a close game and gave the Wildcats a 10-2 lead.

Etter also singled in the game.

Chad Green had a pair of doubles, including a two-run double in the three-run second inning that gave Kentucky the lead for good. Andy McCord and Pookie Jones also had two hits each for the winners. One of Jones’ hits was a triple and one of McCord’s was a double as Kentucky pounded out 10 extra-base hits.

Freshman righty Curtis Whitney hurled five innings of seven-hit, two-run baseball to run his record to 3-0.

Mark Ballard went three-for-three for Maine, including a double. Nick Caiazzo homered and singled for the Bears and Shiro Ando singled twice.

Lance Bogardus, 0-3, picked up the loss.

Fresno State 10, Maine 1

At Fresno Tuesday, senior righthander Tommy Minor fired a six-hitter, striking out 11 and not walking a batter, and his mates scored four times in the second inning to give him the only runs he was to need.

The only run off Minor was unearned. He is now 5-2. LeRoy Decker, 1-2, took the loss.

Singles by Matt Curtis and Matt Purkiss triggered the four-run rally in the second inning. Bill Thrasher singled home the first run, a wild pitch produced the second one, and James Borges singled home the other two. There were also a walk and a hit batsman in the inning.

Curtis had three hits for the winners, 11-12 overall and 2-0 in the Pepsi/Johnny Quik Classic. Borges, Purkiss, and Thrasher had two hits apiece.

Matt Trahan had two hits for Maine, one of which was a double.

RPI 11-10, Husson 9-12

At Lakeland, Fla., Matt Eastman’s solo homer and Sandy McCuaig’s two-run triple in the eighth inning of the second game led the Braves to the split of their doubleheader with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

Leading RPI, 1-5, at the plate in the opener were Jason Angel with a two-run homer in the third inning and Rick Clarkson with two singles and two RBI. Tim Baldwin earned the win in relief.

For Husson, 6-3, John Novak rapped out three singles for three RBI, McCuaig added three more singles, and John Dumont had two singles and an RBI. Peter Allen went the distance, striking out seven and walking five as his record dipped to 1-2.

With the scored tied 9-9 after the regulation seven innings in the second game, Eastman opened the eighth with his homer. Four batters later, McCuaig tripled home Jeff Fogg and John McCarty. RPI could get only one run in the bottom of the eighth.

McCuaig ripped three triples and two singles, Eastman had three singles to go with his homer and had two RBI, and Novak also had three singles. Mark Hreben went the distance, striking out six and walking six, for his first decision.

Jim Willard led RPI with a two-run homer in the first, two singles, and four RBI; and Chris Paoli hit a double and single and had two RBI. Baldwin (1-1) took the loss.
