3 St. John Valley towns to mark 125 years

Madawaska, Fort Kent and Frenchville were incorporated in 1869 and are all celebrating their 125th anniversaries this summer.

Fort Kent has appointed a committee to look into the celebration. It met Saturday to start planning. Gary Saucier is chairman of the committee and Reynold Soucy is vice chairman. Several other people have taken on committee assignments in programming, fund raising, and gathering of historical information.

The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 11.

Frenchville’s committee, headed by the Frenchville Historical Society, has been meeting for some time. Their celebration will take place July 16-24.

Activities include an arts and crafts fair, a carnival, family picnic, talent show, a concert with Les Chanteurs Acadien, a card party, casino night, field day, a dance, a Mass of thanksgiving, dedication of a veterans memorial park, a banquet and fireworks.

The Frenchville committee is headed by Karen Levesque. It has published a history of the town’s 125 years that is available at the Frenchville Town Office.

At Madawaska, voters last month approved a $25,000 municipal expenditure for the celebration. Activities for their celebration will be done in conjunction with the town’s 17th annual Acadian Festival, June 28-July 4.
