BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I have found the case of the hunter who shot an animal, which has subsequently been identified as a wolf, interesting and concerning.

Writing as a person whose father was shot and killed by a careless hunter, I am incredulous that a hunter who has apparently killed a wolf is subject to a fine of $100,000 and prison even though he did not know what he was shooting at the time. The biologists have told us for years that there are no wolves in Maine.

The hunter who killed my father more than 50 years ago was never charged with any crime for his negligence. The hunter who negligently killed Karen Wood within sight of her home was acquitted of all charges and determined not to have committed any criminal act even though he did not know what he was shooting at the time.

Something is wrong with that society which places greater value on the life of a wolf than that of a man or woman. Rodney L. Weeks Masardis
