Ballard lifts Riots past Minutemen

ORONO – Senior righthander Nate Ballard pitched six innings of one-hit, one-run ball to lead the Orono Red Riots to a 4-3 schoolboy baseball win over the Stearns Minutemen here Wednesday.

Charlie Hite drove in what proved to be the winning run with a base hit in the sixth inning.

Ballard struck out eight and walked three and the only run off him was unearned.

Chris Bagley’s two-run single and Mark Thibodeau’s RBI base hit keyed a three-run first inning for Orono. Stearns was paced by Jason Cyr, who doubled in two seventh-inning runs.

Central-EC 14, Lee 0

At East Corinth, Chris Horn fired a five-inning one-hitter, striking out 14 and walking one, before the game was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 12-run rule.

Marty Miller belted a two-run home run in the third for the Red Devils and Willie Rivera hit a two-run shot in the fourth for the hosts.

Tom Cormier singled for Lee.

MDI 4, Sumner 1

At East Sullivan, Matt Clark had a two-run single to help spark Mount Desert Island to victory.

Nick Grant doubled behind winner Adam Lawson, who pitched a five-hitter, striking out eight and walking one for the Trojans.

Brian Jordan singled and scored a run for Sumner to back loser Aaron Naumann, who scattered six hits and did not walk a batter.

Bucksport 15, John Bapst 1

At Bucksport, David Winchester, Jason Orcutt and Tiger Stewart had two hits apiece in the 10-run first inning to power Bucksport.

Orcutt had two doubles in the inning and three runs batted in while Winchester and Stewart each had two singles and two RBIs.

On the day, Stewart drove in five runs as he had a three-run double to go with his two singles.

Jared Zimmerman and Jeff LaChance combinerd on a three-hitter.

Jeremy Spencer had a run-scoring single for John Bapst.

GSA 24, Searsport 3

At Searsport, George Stevens Academy parlayed seven hits and 14 walks into 24 runs and a victory.

Matt Haney belted a two-run home run in the second and Adam Gray socked a three-run homer in the third, with each adding a single, to power the Eagles.

Mike Solovei and Anthony Mollison doubled for Searsport.

Softball

Dexter 11, MA Lynx 3

At Lincoln, Dexter rode a six-run third inning to its second win in four games. The game was called in the seventh because of rain.

Tammy Paige and Tara Gokas each knocked in two runs with a pair of singles to back the pitching of Marlene Carnes.

Stephanie York doubled and singled while loser Kara LaChance tripled in two runs for MA.

Orono 16, Stearns 11

At Orono, Heather Leet went 4-for-4 to lead the Red Riots to victory. Sara Vincent also helped the Red Riots with two hits.

The game was called in the bottom of the fifth on account of rain.

Central 23, Lee Academy 8

At East Corinth, Dawn Wood keyed a 27-hit barrage, driving in six runs with two singles, a triple, and a home run for the host Red Devils. The game was called because of lightning after five innings.

Jamie Miller and Teresa Dow hit four singles each and combined for seven RBIs, while Kerri Butler drove in four runs with a single and a homer.

Kandy Bunker and Charity Jipson drove in two runs each for Lee.

MCI 6, Winslow 1

At Pittsfield, Emily Walker tripled and singled as the host Huskies knocked off the defending Eastern Maine Class B champs and remained unbeaten.

Kylee Berry tripled for the winners.

Bucksport 19, John Bapst 1

At Bucksport, Sherry Sanna drove in five runs with a homer and a double and Kristen Ready went 3-for-5 with two runs batted in to lead Bucksport to its win over John Bapst. Winning pitcher Cara Ready struck out 12.

Sue Smith went 2-for-2 for the Bucks.

Steph Baillie had a double and a single for John Bapst.

MDI 27, Sumner 16

At East Sullivan, Jamie Lewis hit a single, a double and a triple, driving in five runs, to lead the Trojans to the win.

Beth Ashmore added two doubles and two singles, while Heather McDaniel singled in two runs.

For Sumner, Dara Glass knocked a home run and added a single, driving in two runs, and Abby Seward had a single and a double.

Rockland 6, Mount View 3

At Thorndike, Aimee Davis struck out 15 batters in a complete game three-hitter as the Tigers posted their first win of the year.

Lori Farrington doubled and Jamie Oliver had two singles for the winners. Brandy McPherson had an RBI single for Mount View.

George Stevens 16, Searsport 10

At Searsport, Jaime Carroll had nine strikeouts and two walks to lead the Eagles to victory. Carroll also had two singles.

Kelly Wilson had a double, a single and three RBI to lead George Stevens.

For Searsport, Toni Tibbets and Angela Lavin each had two RBI. Jen Russ added three singles.
