Brewer plans community recycling day

BREWER — The city’s recycling committee, public work’s department and Browning Ferris Industries, the company that provides curbside services and runs the city’s recycling center, will hold a community recycling day on Saturday, April 30.

There will be displays and demonstrations from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the recycling center on Sparks Avenue.

Master composters Tom Kurth, John Ellis and Kevin Carr will demonstrate how to turn yard waste such as grass clippings, weeds and leaves into compost that is excellent as mulch or soil-enhancer.

There also will be video presentations and free literature on composting and recycling.

Brewer Agway, Bradstreet Fuel Co. and Hamel Fuel will display home recycling equipment, such as mulching mowers, compost bins and backyard chipper-shredders.

BFI will have displays showing how recycled materials are prepared for shipment to plants for reuse.

Residents of Brewer and of the towns of Eddington, Orrington, Holden, Dedham and Lucerne are encouraged to take bottles, cans, corrugated cardboard and newspaper to the recycling center on Saturday.

Northeast Occupational Exchange, a supported-employment program, will operate its recycling center for redeemable cans and bottles from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
