Brewer woman faces several charges 66-year-old found by police after leaving scene of Eastern Avenue accident

A 66-year-old Brewer woman faces numerous charges after she left the scene of a car accident Saturday morning.

Joan Iwaniszek had been driving her blue 1987 Oldsmobile sedan in reverse at high speed in front of an apartment complex on Eastern Avenue when she struck another blue Oldsmobile sedan owned by Rita Comer of Brewer, Bangor police Sgt. Chris Martin said. Witnesses said Iwaniszek’s car spun 360 degrees and quickly left the parking lot.

Iwaniszek and her car were found in the parking lot of Shop ‘n Save on Wilson Street in Brewer, and police stopped her at the Twin City Plaza as she was attempting to drive toward State Street, Martin said. Iwaniszek told Cpl. Keith Emery and Cpl. Roger Hershey that she knew she had been in an accident but the officers said that she appeared unconcerned.

Each car had more than $1,000 in damage, Martin said. Iwaniszek was charged with operating a motor vehicle after the suspension of her license, failing to report an accident and driving to endanger. She will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Nov. 8. Iwaniszek’s license was under suspension for failing to report an accident.

An Ellsworth teen was arrested and faces alcohol- and drug-related charges after police watched the car he was driving drive behind a convenience store and park.

Brewer police Officer Jeff Gotreau found Douglas Hardison, 19, urinating in a corner near a garbage bin and smelling of alcohol, Brewer police Sgt. Chris Martin said. Hardison admitted that he had had a couple of beers, spilled beer on his shirt and had been driving.

Hardison failed a field sobriety test, and after he was searched he allegedly was found to be in possession of marijuana and a marijuana pipe, Martin said. Unopened cans of beer were found inside the car. Hardison was charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, possession of a usable amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, and illegal transportation of alcohol by a minor. Hardison’s blood alcohol level was higher than the 0.08 limit for a person over age 21.

The two passengers in the car were not charged, Martin said. Hardison will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Nov. 8.

Members of the Orono Police Department are investigating a break-in into the Orono Medical Center on Main Street, where the intruder apparently took nothing, police said.

An owner of the building, formerly known as MedNow, went to work around 7 a.m. to find the building had been broken into, Detective Sgt. Robert Bryant said Monday evening. The intruder broke a window to enter the building and damaged an inside door to gain access to a section of the building.

The intruder rummaged through some offices, but appeared to have taken nothing, though the Orono Medical Center was doing an inventory Monday to be sure nothing was missing, Bryant said. Police believe that the intruder was not inside long and either didn’t find what was being searched for or was scared off. Damage to the building is estimated at $400.

Thousands of dollars worth of power tools were stolen from a boom truck parked at Whited Ford, 207 Perry Road, sometime during the last four days, Bangor police said.

The truck, owned by Bangor Neon, a sign company, was parked from Oct. 10 until Monday morning when it was noticed that someone had broken off the locks to storage compartments on the body of the truck, Bangor police Officer Robert Hutchings Jr. said. The tools were valued at more than $2,350. Police are using a surveillance tape from the area to investigate the theft Monday.

A Bangor man returned to his Hammond Street home from Penobscot County Jail to find one of his windows broken after numerous people had entered his home, with two of the people getting into a fight, while he was in jail.

Witnesses told police that people who were friends with the man and others who were not friends had gone into his home while he was in jail, Bangor police Officer Wade Betters said. Two teen girls began fighting inside the apartment, with one 16-year-old eventually dragging another 16-year-old outside.

The girl remaining in the home went to a rear room when she heard the sound of breaking glass and returned to the front door to find a window broken and the other girl gone, Betters said. Damage to the home was estimated at $75. Police were still searching for the girl allegedly responsible for the damage Monday night.

A Bangor woman was issued a summons to appear in court for criminal mischief after she allegedly kicked in the fender of her ex-boyfriend’s car Sunday.

Nicole Strout, 30, went to her former boyfriend’s home on Court Street and, after arguing with him about another woman he was allegedly seeing, kicked and dented the front driver’s side fender of his car, the boyfriend told Bangor police Officer Wade Betters. Strout, however, claimed she had gone over to retrieve her personal belongings when he reportedly told her she could have her items if she had sexual relations with him. Strout claimed that she “placed” her foot on his car but did not kick it.

Strout will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Nov. 18. Damage to the car was estimated at $100.

A Brewer man was arrested and charged with domestic assault after police investigated a 911 hang-up call.

Brewer police arrived at the Brian Drive home of Paul Caron just after 1:30 p.m. Sunday to find his wife trying to get out of the home, but with him holding her by the waist, Brewer police Sgt. Chris Martin said. The woman was yelling to the officers for help, but disappeared back into the home when Caron allegedly pulled her back in.

Police noted that the woman’s shirt was torn and that she was crying and upset, Martin said. Police said that Caron had been drinking alcohol. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and will appear in 3rd District Court in Bangor on Nov. 8.

Damage to two cars totaled about $9,000 after they collided on Hogan Road in Bangor Monday morning.

Kathleen Marquis, 35, of Dover-Foxcroft drove her 2002 Kia van onto Hogan Road just after 6:30 a.m. Monday when the accident occurred. Her driver’s side bumper and the front passenger’s side of the 1996 Ford sedan driven by Linda Marsters, 60, of Old Town came into contact, said Bangor police Officer Douglas Moore. Marquis had been driving on the off-ramp of Interstate 95 north and Marsters had been driving south on Hogan Road.

A witness said that Marquis ran a red light. Marquis said the light had just turned green but Marsters said her light had been blinking yellow, Moore said. Damage to the van was estimated at $4,000 and the sedan at $5,000.
