Westbrook canoer dies in Sebago Lake

STANDISH – A Westbrook man who was dog-sitting for his sister apparently drowned when he and the dog took a canoe onto Sebago Lake on a windy day, authorities said Tuesday.

Guy Ladouceur’s body was recovered at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, roughly 11 hours after his sister reported her brother, her dog and her canoe missing, said Mark Latti of the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife.

Ladouceur, 52, was believed to have taken the canoe and the dog onto the lake Sunday, the same day wardens received a report of a dog alone on an island and an overturned canoe in the lower basin, Latti said.

Wardens found the canoe and the dog, which had no identification, but called off the search because there was no missing person’s report, Latti said.

The search was renewed when the sister returned home at 11 p.m. Sunday and contacted authorities, Latti said. The body was found in about 10 feet of water between the shore and an island, he said.
