String quartet to open Arcady winter concerts

BANGOR – The Forte String Quartet will open the Arcady Winter Concert Series, performing in Bangor at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 21, at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Park Street. The Forte, currently the quartet-in-residence at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, performs regularly in New York City, including at Weill Recital Hall in Carnegie Hall.

The members of the quartet, from Bulgaria and Ukraine, have been winners of many awards and competitions, and have played in the Kiev Chamber Orchestra. As a quartet they have toured England, France, Austria, Switzerland, Bulgaria and Greece, as well as the United States.

“Le Progress” in Paris had these words of praise: “The perfect synchronization among the four musicians and their excellent technique, subordinated to extreme sensitiveness, raised them to the level of great artists.”

Monday’s concert will include music by Beethoven and Schostakovitch. Tickets are $15 at the door, or $13 in advance at BookMarc’s, RDL Strings and Lippincott Books, and Patrick’s Card Shop in Bangor; Pretty Woman in Orono; and Schacht’s Hardware in Hampden.

Tickets are $12 if purchased in four-admission flexi-pass. Those under age 18 are admitted free.

The Forte also will perform with the Orono High School orchestra at a special program at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, at Orono High, capping off the quartet’s all-day visit with all the string ensembles at the Orono schools.

The public is encouraged to attend the Friday program, which will feature the OHS orchestra playing with the Forte Quartet. The quartet also will perform short selections of pieces they will perform at their Monday concert in Bangor.

For the Orono program, donations of $5 for adults will be accepted at the door. Children are admitted free.

The day of music for Orono students, culminating in the joint evening program with the OHS Orchestra, is an Arcady program sponsored by Bangor Savings Bank. For more information, call 990-2805.
