Brewer offense, defense shines Witches go to 7-0; Belfast battle looms

BREWER – Any thoughts that the Brewer football team might look past Old Town Friday night to its encounter next week with undefeated Belfast were put to rest just over three minutes after the Witches took the opening kickoff. That’s when quarterback Sean Collins crashed into the end zone with Brewer’s first touchdown of the night.

Collins’ touchdown opened the floodgates as Court Rancourt and Seth Emerson scored three touchdowns apiece and the Witches cruised past Old Town 51-0.

With the win the Witches move to 7-0 and can now look to next Friday’s big game at Belfast with the 7-0 Lions.

“They love to play the game,” Brewer coach Josh Emmett said. I don’t worry about them looking past anybody. They understand. They know how important it is.”

Strong is an understatement. The Witches rolled up 502 total yards in offense. Emerson led the way with 103 yards on 8 carries, including a 21-yard run around right end in which he made four tacklers miss.

“The offense was blocking real well. They made some big holes and they contained the outside so we could run out and around,” Emerson said.

In addition to running for a touchdown, Collins hooked up with Rancourt for two TD passes and finished with 133 yards passing while completing 9 of 21 attempts.

Rancourt also contributed on the ground with 75 yards on six carries, including a 16-yard touchdown run.

Josh Caldwell added a touchdown on a 3-yard run and finished with 78 yards rushing and 35 more receiving.

The Brewer defense was also stellar, holding the 0-7 Indians to 28 yards in total offense, including minus-53 yards on the ground.

They constantly harassed Old Town freshman quarterback Jared Goody, sacking him five times and hitting him on numerous occasions.

“The D-line was making holes for our linebackers and the coaches were calling some chutes and we were just getting in there and making it happen,” Brewer senior linebacker Eric Trask said.

“Chutes” is a technique in which defensive linemen engage offensive linemen creating gaps for linebackers to run through. Brewer worked it well. Trask and company spent much of the game with a free run at Goody.

“The best way to start a game off is to get to the quarterback and hit him hard and slow him down and make him think,” Trask said. “He hung in there. He’s a tough kid. But it gets to you after a while.”

Goody finished with 8 completions on 19 attempts for 81 yards, Senior Jason Adams hauled in four of the passes for 56 yards.

“[Goody] is why we went with a freshman at quarterback,” Old Town coach Keith Holland said. “We’ve got to get better at the skills positions and we’ve got to get faster and stronger as a team. That’s our goal, to get better every day and we do. The scores don’t show it but I see improvement every day with our team.”
