FALMOUTH (AP) _ Jason Caron of Massachusetts and Terry DeLeo of Vermont shot 1-under- par 70s at the Falmouth Country Club on Tuesday to take the first round lead in the New England Amateur golf tournament.

Paul Couture, Frank Vana Jr. and R.D. Haskell Jr., all of Massa- chusetts, and Tim Faherty of Maine finished one stroke back at 71.

Nathan Caron and Bill McIner- ney, both of Massachusetts, carded 72s.

The field of 162 will be cut to the low 40s scorers and ties after Wednesday’s round in preparation for the final two rounds Thursday.
