2 men are killed in separate woods accidents

Two men have died in two days in woods accidents.

Michael D. Coro, 38, of Jackson died Tuesday when a tree limb struck him on the head, according to Chief Deputy Mike Brown of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department.

Brown said that Coro, who worked for Mason Inc. of Greenville as a woodsman, was cutting trees in Boyd Township-Township 1 Range 4 area. He cut a tree, which fell into another tree causing a limb to fall on his head.

Greenville police called Somerset County Sheriff’s Department about 11 a.m. Rescue workers airlifted the man to the hospital, but it was too late.

Coro was married and had four children.

Deputy Rene Guay handled the call for Somerset County.

On Monday, a Winthrop man died when a tree that he was cutting fell on him, state police said.

Scott Blackstone, 29, died about 12:45 p.m. in the woods off Chase Road in Readfield, said Trooper Keith Frank.

Blackstone had been cutting trees alone in the woods on land owned by Tom Higgins of Readfield, Frank said.

Higgins was heading out to do some errands and stopped by the wood-cutting site, only to find the man pinned under a fallen ash tree measuring 18 inches in diameter, Frank said.

“It appears that he died of suffocation,” the trooper said. “He had his face pinned on the ground.”

Blackstone was pronounced dead at the scene.
