Fort Kent native wins teaching award

FORT KENT — Bradford College professor Dr. Robert Smart, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lionel Smart of Fort Kent, was named winner of a 1989 Sears-Roebuck Foundation Teaching Excellence and Campus Leadership Award.

Smart is one of nearly 700 faculty members recognized by the foundation for resourcefulness and leadership as a private college educator. Each winner receives $1,000 and his or her institution, a grant ranging from $500 to $1,500, depending on student enrollment. Winners are selected by independent committees on each campus.

Dr. Janice Green, Bradford College academic dean, said, “Since his arrival at Bradford in 1984, Dr. Smart has developed and implemented a unique approach to the teaching of writing and critical thinking that serves as the foundation stone of the Bradford curriculum.

“In addition, he provided leadership in the establishment of the Bradford Honors Program and since 1986 has served as chairman of the Division of Humanities. Dr. Smart is an inspiring teacher and an exemplar of the age-old tradition of liberal arts education,” she said.

“More than that, however, he has exerted his influence and talents to broadly improve teaching and learning across the campus, to serve as a resource and mentor for his colleagues.”

The program is administered nationally by the Stamford, Conn.-based Foundation for Independent Higher Education.
