Quinn to defend Maine Open> Massachusetts golfer has work cut out in seeking rare double

Brian Quinn of Northboro, Mass., will attempt to win his second straight Maine Open Golf Championship when the 76th edition of the event begins Wednesday at Riverside Municipal Golf Course in Portland.

If Quinn can pull it off, it will be a rare double in the three-day, 54-hole event.

Mike Colandro, now of Canton, Mass., won back-to-back titles in 1986 and ’87, but the last time it was done before that was by Charlie Shepard in 1949 and ’50.

Quinn shot a final-round score of 8-under-par 64 last year to win by three strokes over Mark Fogg of Gorham and Jeff Lewis of Sandwich, Mass.

Quinn did struggle last month at the Greater Bangor Open. He finished at 215, 13 strokes behind winner Jason Widener of Durham, N.C.

Fogg also had a good final day last year with a 69, and Lewis leapfrogged a lot of players with a last-round 65.

Fogg and Lewis are both back for another attempt at victory. Lewis has won twice before, in 1979 at Riverside and ’85 at Springbrook Golf Club in Leeds, but Fogg is still searching for his first Maine Open crown. In fact, no Maine pro has won the Maine Open in 25 years.

Colandro will also be vying to regain his crown.

Among the other top players scheduled to compete are Paul Antenucci of Paramus, N.J., David Gunas of Hebron, Conn., and Larry Rentz of Mamaroneck, N.Y.

Antenucci battled into a tie for the lead before finishing second in the GBO last month, while Gunas and Rentz, who both started the final day of the GBO a stroke off the lead, tied for third.

Also among the contenders are perennials Jeff Grygiel, a Syracuse native playing out of Westbrook this summer; Jim Becker of Poquonock, Conn.; 1984 champ Dana Quigley of Barrington, R.I.; 1990 winner Pete Morgan of Harwich, Mass.; 1992 champ Joe Clark Jr. of Holderness, N.H.; and Bill Downes of Hampden, Mass., who tied for fifth last year.

On the Maine pro side, in addition to Fogg, the top competitors are Jerry DiPhilippo of Falmouth, Mike Baker of Bangor, and host club assistant pro Tim Angis of Portland.
