Trumbull survives; Bangor waits at Regionals

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) – Pitcher John Blaze drove in four runs, three on a first inning homerun, to pace Trumbull, Conn., to a 10-1 win over Brattleboro, Vt., on Wednesday in the Little League Eastern Regionals.

Blaze also stuck out eight batters and helped Trumbull win in the loser’s bracket of the double-elimination tournament, which is being played at A. Bartlett Giammati complex.

After the first two batters had reached for Trumbull in the first inning, Blazence. Vito Fabiano and Ryan Bucci also hit home runs for the winning team.

Vince Giamartino was 3-for-3 with the lone RBI for Brattleboro.

The Maine champions from Bangor West Side Little League swing back into action today after an off day in a winners’ bracket game at 5 p.m.

Bangor West, 2-0, is one of only four teams in the 11-team tourney without a loss. They will face the hard-hitting Massachusetts champs from Middleboro.

Middleboro pounded out 23 hits in its lone tourney game, an 18-6 win over Oakland, Md., Wednesday.

Bangor defeated Trumbull 7-3 on Tuesday and followed that up with a 12-3 victory over Salem, N.H. on Wednesday.

In other Thursday games, Justin Smith scattered six hits to hurl Franklin, Pa. to a 14-3 win over Salem, N.H.

Matt Burkett, Josh Boozell, Jason Rockwell, and Kevin Mong each had two RBIs for Franklin. Fred Carter hit a two-run home run for Salem.

Jim Needles and Matt Folke each had three hits to lead Canal Little League of Delaware to a 9-6 win over East Greenwich, R.I. Tim Vaillencourt went the distance to gain the victory. T.J. Sherman was 3-for-3 with a home run for East Greenwich.

Salem, East Greenwich and Brattleboro were eliminated from the tournament.
