Cliff Buzzell doesn’t mind hearing the boos.
Why should he?
Buzzell, the driver of the No. 0 Street Stock Camaro at Speedway 95 in Hermon, has been on a roll of snowball proportions lately.
In his last 16 races, Buzzell has taken 13 checkered flags, including five in a row.
The run has vaulted him to the top of the season point standings, 20 points ahead of Ikey Dorr of Addison.
Over the years, Speedway 95 fans have proven themselves to be a group who can appreciate a winner. At least as long as the winner doesn’t keep winning… and winning… and winning.
“I don’t have all that many fans out there,” admitted the 30-year-old Hermon driver. “They like to boo a lot.”
Many successful Speedway 95 drivers have been booed by this lot. Just ask drivers like Bill Harnish or John Kalel. Still, Buzzell is taking the crowd reaction in stride, racing week to week.
Only he keeps winning.
“The main thing is the car has been handling and we’ve been staying out of trouble,” Buzzell said. “It’s been kind of fun out there actually. You just bide your time and by the time the race is halfway over most of the cars are either wrecked or out of the way.”
Ironically, Buzzell entered the season with plans of running a semi-regular schedule and taking time off whenever he wanted to. Point chases were the last thing on his mind.
“We just started winning and figured we should stay with it,” Buzzell said.
The points championship would be nice, Buzzell said, but it’s not a goal.
“It would be nice, but we’re just going to settle for doing our best,” said Cliff Buzzell, whose best lately has been the best.
Oxford Plains Speedway will host another American Canadian Tour race this season.
The Labor Day Classic, scheduled for Monday, Sept. 5, will replace the rained-out Bud 150 season-opener which was going to be held at Lee/USA in Lee, N.H.
“Because of Lee’s schedule, we were not able to come to an agreement on a replacement date,” said ACT President Tom Curley. “Our points race is exceptionally close this year and in fairness to the competitors we certainly did not want to cancel an event.”
Oxford Plains has become the home base for the ACT, hosting three races, including the True Value Oxford 250.
Other remaining ACT races at Oxford include the season finale on Sunday, Oct. 9.
Speedway 95 will host the Intown Auto 100 on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.
The race will also be the final stage in the Summer Sizzler Series.
Regular racers from Wiscasset Raceway and Spud Speedway in Caribou should also be on hand for the $8,000-plus event.
