Aarts powers UM to sweep Bears take two from Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Meagan Aarts notched two goals as the Maine Black Bears completed a weekend sweep of the Vermont Catamounts with a 4-0 women’s ice hockey victory Saturday.

Jarin Sjogren opened the scoring for 2-0 Maine at 1:05 of the first, while Aarts scored four minutes, 30 seconds later. Rebecca Culver scored off assists from Andra Steranko and Cheryl White with 16 seconds to go in the period. Aarts capped the scoring at 17:14 of the second. Lara Smart made 20 saves against 20 shots.

Kami Cote and Tiffany Hayes combined to stop 40 out of 44 shots for the 1-5-0 Catamounts.

Men’s soccer

UMFK 6, UMPI 3

At Presque Isle, Andrew Clavette and Romiro Rodriguez scored two goals each Saturday and the University of Maine-Fort Kent rolled by rival UM-Presque Isle.

men’s soccer team continued to roll with a come from behind 6-3 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle.

Goalkeeper Chad Bouchard had two saves on five shots and converted a penalty kick for 13-1-1 UM-Fort Kent. Josh Roy also scored a goal for the Bengals who rallied from a 3-1 halftime deficit.

Ben Goodwin and Jay Johnson scored first-half goals for the 4-12 Owls. Tim Dolley racked up 10 saves against 17 shots.

UM-Machias 4, Thomas 3

Machias -Mahmoud Sowe scored two goals as UM-Machias edged Thomas College 4-3 Sunday.

Mike Zedeiler and Brett Howarth each recorded goals while Kenrick Liburd, Matt Salyer and Jorge Tassara tallied assists.

Courtenay Campbell made nine saves on 12 shots including a stopped penalty kick.

Rick Kelley scored two goals for Thomas with assists from Ben Wheeler and Jason Laing. Adam Caron assisted a goal by Ben Wheeler while Ryan Conley faced 15 shots and stopped 11.

Unity 2, Massachusetts Bay 1

At Concord, N.H., Saturday, Travis Bedard scored unassisted for Unity to send the game into two overtimes and eventually into penalty kicks where Unity would outshoot Mass. Bay 5-4.

Jay Snell stopped three of four shots in net for Unity.

Javier Orantes scored for Massachusetts Bay while Bendi Saranto faced six shots and stopped four.

Bowdoin 4, Colby 0

At Waterville Saturday, Ethan Roth, Bobby Desilets, Andrew Russo and Bucky Jencks had a goal apiece in the win for Bowdoin of Brunswick.

Kevin Folan dished out an assist for the 10-2-1 Polar Bears. Travis Derr and Tom Davis combined to make three saves on six shots.

Brian Davidson stopped six out of 18 shots for the White Mules.

Maine 1, Binghamton 0

At Orono, Sunday, Maine’s goal was scored by a Binghamton defender who deflected the ball in at 84:05 with Black Bear senior Luke Garner on the play.

Freshman keeper Chad Mongeon made four saves on 10 shots for 2-10-2 Maine.

Ian Wendel faced 12 shots and stopped six for 5-10-1 Binghamton.

UM-Machias 2, Husson 0

At Machias, Howard Gray scored with an assist from Andy Swift to help give the 13-2-1 University of Maine at Machias the win Saturday

Brett Howarth added an unassisted goal while Andy Swift made 10 saves.

Matt Goodman had three saves in goal for Husson.

Vermont Tech. 1, Unity 0

At Concord, N.H., Chris Seguin scored the only goal to win the game for Vermont Tech. on Sunday.

Brian Tarbox made four saves on seven shots for Vermont.

Jay Snell faced 10 shots in goal for Unity and made seven saves.

Women’s soccer

UMPI 4, UM-Fort Kent 0

At Presque Isle, Sarah Gibb scored two goals and had an assist to help lead the 8-3-3 University of Maine at Presque Isle to the win.

Tara Cropley and Jackie Pitcairn each had a goal and an assist while Steph Gagnon added an assist and Noreen Marcino stopped three of three shots.

Jamie Pelletier faced 10 shots and stopped six for the 5-10 University of Maine at Fort Kent.

UM-Machias 5, Thomas 0

At Machias, Stephanie Hannan had two goals and two assists to help carry the University of Maine at Machias past Thomas.

Erin O’Callahan scored two goals and had an assist while Meejin Moore added a goal. Shelly Hayden recorded an assist while Trisha Farrell and Angela Qualey combined in net.

Jessie Craft faced 31 shots in net for Thomas.

Stony Brook 4, Maine 1

At Stony Brook, N.Y. Sunday, Beth Arikian scored a goal and assisted on two others in the Seawolves win over the Black Bears.

Victoria Feliciano, Dana White and Krisha Zagura also connected for goals for Stony Brook, which improved to 5-9-3 and 3-1-2 in America East. Cindy Bennett made seven saves on 16 shots.

Heather Hathorn scored the Maine goal unassisted while Naomi Welsh stopped one of the 12 shots she face. The Black Bears dropped to 6-8-1 and 2-4-1 in America East.

Maine closes out the regular season at home on Thursday with a game against New Hampshire at 2:30 p.m.

UM-Machias 2, Husson 1

At Machias Saturday, Steph Hannan and Katie McWade notched a goal each for the victorious Clippers.

Erin O’Callahan dished out an assist for UM-Machias. Tricia Farrell made two saves.

Beatrice DeYcaza scored off a pass from Deidra Hamm for the Braves. Meg Taylor collected six saves.

Bowdoin 6, Colby 1

At Waterville Saturday, Hillary Smith had two goals plus an assist to lift the Polar Bears of Brunswick.

Cedar Goldman notched a goal plus an assist for 21st-ranked Bowdoin, who moves to 10-2-1. Christine Goss, Shelly Chessie and Jill Falwell also had goals. Anna Shapell made six saves against 13 shots.

Kara McCabe scored her first collegiate goal for the 5-8 White Mules. Elizabeth Riley stopped 10 out of 22 shots.

Field hockey

Maine 1, Vermont 0

At Burlington, Vt. Sunday, Karly Bundy scored off a pass from Rebecca Ouellet at 17:31 of the first half to give the Black Bears the win.

Jaye Lance made three saves against 10 shots to earn the shutout for 14-2 Maine.

Holly Colberg collected six saves on 11 shots for the 6-12 Catamounts.

Colby 4, Bowdoin 0

At Waterville Saturday, Wendy Bonner and Sari Gilbert each notched a goal plus an assist as the White Mules upset the 15th-ranked Polar Bears.

Shelley Hughes and Jenn Brenneman had a goal each for 9-4 Colby and Lyndsay Peters and Injoo Han had assists. Carrie Morin made 10 saves on 15 shots for the shutout.

Gillian McDonald stopped three out of 12 shots for 10-3 Bowdoin of Brunswick.

So. Maine 3, Fitchburg St. 1

At Gorham Sunday, Sarah Dolley’s two goals lifted the Huskies to the win.

Rachel Nimon also had a goal for 10-6 Southern Maine while Renee Heath, Darci Holland, Amy Ouellette and Sarah Metivier each had assists. Jessie Superichi made three saves on four shots.

Veronica Orozco scored off a pass from Julie Wessells for the 6-8 Falcons. Angela Buffington stopped eight out of 15 shots.

Becker 1, UM-Farmington 0

At Farmington, Sara Jordan, Rebecca Marks and Lisa Alleruzzo each scored penalty shots to give 12-1 Becker the win after two scoreless overtimes on Saturday.

Brooke Robichaud made 17 saves, three during penalty strokes for Becker.

Fawn Albert made 13 saves for 9-5 University of Maine at Farmington as well as saving one in penalty strokes and one in the second overtime.

Volleyball

Maine defeats Stony Brook

At Stony Brook, N.Y., Carmen Gabriel had her first triple-double with 11 kills, 30 assists and 15 digs for Maine as they defeated Stony Brook 30-22, 30-18 and 30-16 on Saturday.

Kaili Jordan contributed with 11 kills, five assists and six digs while Leah Guidinger added 11 kills and nine digs for the 7-17 Black Bears. Marina Ivankovic chipped in with 14 digs and three assists.

Julie Zub had 21 assists, three kills and nine digs for 17-10 Stony Brook while Rachel Goldsmith had five kills and five digs and Abby Egan helped out with 10 digs.
