BANGOR – The accused killer of two cabdrivers in New York City was escorted back to New York on Monday afternoon to face murder charges.
Roberto Carlos Mayen, 26, from Fairfax County, Va., is a former Marine whom New York officials had sought in connection with the shooting deaths of two men from the Bronx. He was taken from the Penobscot County Jail in Bangor by members of the New York City Police Department just after noon Monday and was destined for a New York City jail.
Mayen “was a quiet, normal inmate. There was nothing extraordinary about him,” jail officials said of Mayen’s behavior during his stay at the county jail.
Mayen had been held at the Penobscot County Jail since he waived extradition last Wednesday. He was arrested after driving from Maine into Canada and then back again without stopping either time. After re-entering the United States, members of the U.S. Border Patrol overtook him 22 miles south of Houlton on Interstate 95.
Police believe Mayen gunned down two cabdrivers after stealing a New Jersey couple’s silver Audi at gunpoint.
In New York, Mayen is charged with two counts of second-degree murder, one count of manslaughter and two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon. If convicted he faces the possibility of 15 years to life in prison for each murder count.
He is also wanted in New Jersey for the carjacking.
