Yacht, sloop collide in fog off Matinicus

MATINICUS ROCK — In what could have been a serious accident, a collision in heavy fog between a 104-foot motor yacht and a 37-foot sailboat Monday morning resultedonly in damage to the sloop’s mast, U.S. Coast Guard officials reported.

The collision took place about six miles southeast of Matinicus Rock which is located about 15 miles south of Vinalhaven.

No one was injured in the accident and neither vessel sustained any other damages, according to Group Duty Officer Kevin LeClair of the Southwest Harbor station. Four people were on board the motor yacht and three people on the sloop.

Involved in the collision were My Other Honey, a power yacht with a home port of Bath, Ohio, and Running Free, a Tartan sloop from Marblehead, Mass. The names of the owner and operator of each vessel were not available.
