BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I feel compelled to respond to Al Diamon’s column of Oct. 15 because I think it is the first time in my life that I agree with him!

Back when I served in the Maine Senate (1986-1992), I was known as a social conservative (because I am one who takes the Constitution literally and believe it gives us all freedom). In the beginning, Dennis `Duke” Dutremble was too. In 1986 and 1988, Duke and I voted the same way on these issues.

Imagine my surprise in 1991 when I returned the Monday after Good Friday to find my vote for special gay rights had been paired with Duke! He had flip-flopped and changed his vote in that year to pro-abortion and pro-special gay rights. I was very surprised because I well remember them coming to me when David Emery changed his mind on these issues and they say it cost him the election to Congress.

The other issue in Diamon’s column I agree with is the one of Mark Finks. I do not take my religion or my politics lightly. I believe strongly in certain issues and have never been afraid to stand up for them.

I, as a Christian, do not believe it is God’s will for Mark to be running. I do not believe he has credibility for this race since he was the one who tried have Susan Collins’ name taken off the ballot. Why? I don’t know. I can only guess as I have never talked to him personally. His running gives the appearance that if he can’t have his way he will do it himself. His brochure bills him as the real choice. Real choice for pro-family? Someone with no credibility? Who anointed him God? How was he chosen?

There are many capable, fine, credible Christians who could have been write-ins and united us. He does not. The far right is doing a very bad service to all Christians and I would beg them to stop. Play by the rules. Stop being close-minded.

I am doing research on separation of state and church. I have more questions now than answers but I do believe with all my heart that Christians have a right to participate in the political arena as everyone else does. This is probably one reason why so many Republicans are turned off by things happening.

I, for one, want to work cooperatively to be a solution to problems. I have a history of bringing groups together. I have worked hard for years to pass on to the next generation the work ethic, honesty and openness. I am human and have made my share of mistakes and always will but let’s play by the rules or change them.

Thanks, Al, my hat is off to you. Linda Curtis Brawn Camden
