3 teams seeking 3rd straight state championships Playoff action heavy this weekend

Two field hockey teams and a volleyball squad will each be in the hunt for a third straight title when state championships in those sports are contested Saturday.

Cross country state crowns will also be handed out Saturday, along with regional titles for boys and girls soccer. Class A football playoffs open Friday night to kick off the busy postseason weekend.

The No. 2 Bangor football team will host a Pine Tree Conference quarterfinal game against No. 7 Waterville at 7 p.m. at Cameron Stadium.

The final regular-season football games for Classes B and C will be Friday and Saturday.

All three field hockey championship games will be held at Gorham High School. Class B Winslow and Class C Dexter are both seeking their third state title in a row. The Black Raiders will face Greely of Cumberland Center at 10 a.m., while the Tigers take on Hall-Dale of Farmingdale at 2 p.m. Class A Skowhegan, the defending state champ, will play Edward Little of Auburn at noon.

The No. 1 Woodland volleyball team is after its third state championship in a row.

Volleyball semifinals and finals will be held Saturday at the University of Maine-Machias. The two semifinal matches, which feature the Dragons against No. 4 Lubec and No. 2 Jonesport-Beals against No. 3 Greely, will start at 3:30 p.m. and will be played simultaneously. The finals are set for 8 p.m.

Cross country state competition will be held at the University of Maine-Augusta. The meet gets under way with the Class D boys, featuring EM winner Valley of Bingham, at 10 a.m. followed by the Class D girls, including regional champ Washington Academy at East Machias, at 10:45. The Class A boys will start at 11:30 and the girls will start at 12:15 p.m. The Mt. Blue of Farmington teams took the EM regional titles.

Eastern Maine champ MDI heads up the Class B boys race at 1 p.m. while Hampden will lead the Class B girls start at 1:45. Class C finishes the day with Piscataquis of Guilford leading the way in the 2:30 p.m. boys race and the Mattanawcook of Lincoln girls headlining that race at 3:15 p.m.

Regional finals will be contested in soccer Saturday. In Eastern Maine, the No. 2 Lawrence of Fairfield boys travel to No. 1 Mount Ararat of Topsham and the No. 3 Mount Ararat girls head to No. 1 Brunswick. The Class B matchups will be No. 2 Ellsworth boys at No. 1 Winslow at 2 p.m. and the No. 6 Camden Hills girls at No. 1 Bucksport at 1:30 p.m.

In Class C, the No. 5 Penquis boys of Milo will face No. 3 George Stevens at Blue Hill at 1:30 p.m. and the No. 6 Hodgdon girls are at No. 1 Searsport at 1 p.m.

In Class D, both Van Buren teams are seeking regional titles with the girls at Lee today and the boys hosting Shead of Eastport on Saturday.

The No. 2 Crusaders will battle the No. 1 and undefeated Lee Academy Pandas at 2 p.m.

On Saturday, the No. 8 Shead of Eastport boys will be seeking their third straight upset of the playoffs when they take on No. 3 Van Buren at 1 p.m.

State soccer championships will be held Saturday, Nov. 9. Locations have not yet been determined.
