I could not believe my eyes as I read the article in your Oct. 15-16 paper. The Joshua L. Chamberlain Chapter of National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws? What on earth does Joshua L. Chamberlain have to do with marijuana reform?
Joshua L. Chamberlain fought for his country and state at Fredericksburg, Gettysburg, Petersburg, Five Forks and many others. He showed honor and respect to the defeated Confederate troops when he was chosen to receive the surrendering army at Appomattox.
It has only been in the last few years that he has started to receive the recognition and honor he deserves. He does not deserve to have his name connected with this group. They are not honoring him, they are disgracing him.
Hopefully, his descendants, the Pejepscott Historical Society and the 20th Maine re-enactors can combine forces and try to stop this outrage.
Joshua L. Chamberlain was not an advocate for drug use. Joshua L. Chamberlain was a hero. Let’s make sure he stays that way. Jean Bradbury Milbridge
