Bates College notched its second win of the season as Sean Atkins and the Bobcats rolled over Bowdoin 48-28, giving them their first victory in the Colby-Bates-Bowdoin series since 1999.
In other Maine college games this weekend, Colby shut out Tufts 9-0 while Westfield State trounced Maine Maritime Academy of Castine 34-8.
The University of Maine, which had the weekend off, plays Atlantic 10 rival Delaware at Orono next Saturday.
Bates 42, Bowdoin 28
At Bowdoin’s home field in Brunswick, Atkins ran 298 yards on 38 carries and scored seven touchdowns. Atkins set the school record for touchdowns and a NESCAC record for rushing touchdowns in a single game.
Atkins opened the scoring on a 23-yard sweep two plays after Bowdoin (1-6, 1-6) fumbled the opening kickoff on its 25-yard line. Atkins scored on a 2-yard dive and again on a 30-yard touchdown rush to make it 21-7 for Bates (2-5, 2-4) after one period.
Bowdoin made it 21-14 after a 12-play, 57-yard drive capped by Geoff Close’s 3-yard touchdown. Atkins scored on a 19-yard run to put Bates ahead 28-14.
Bates extended its lead in the first drive of the second half with Atkins running 73 yards on eight plays. Atkins scored again on a 1-yard rush to make it 35-14.
Bowdoin scored twice more, but Atkins completed the scoring with 6-yard and 15-yard runs.
Colby 9, Tufts 0
In Medford, Mass., Colby’s Aaron Stepka ran for 177 yards and scored the game’s only touchdown as the White Mules beat Tufts.
Colby (3-4 NESCAC) held Tufts to 76 yards of total offense and four first downs. Tufts (3-4) mustered 24 yards on 24 rushes.
Stepka, who had 47 carries, scored on a 6-yard run with 5:17 left in the first quarter to give Colby a 6-0 lead. John Goss added a 30-yard field goal. For Tufts, Evan Zupancic intercepted two passes.
Westfield State 34, MMA 8
In Castine, Westfield State’s Chris Lapointe threw for 199 yards and two touchdowns, leading the way to a win over Maine Maritime in a game that featured 16 turnovers.
Westfield State (8-0, 8-0 NEFC), which leads all Division III teams in total defense, remained unbeaten by holding Maine Maritime (0-8, 0-8) to 98 yards of total offense and forcing nine turnovers, including seven fumbles.
Westfield State lost five fumbles, and Lapointe threw two interceptions.
After Maine Maritime cut the lead to 20-8 on a 1-yard run by Don Cummington late in the first half, Don Jones scored on a 1-yard run and Lapointe hit Erik Consilvio for a 23-yard TD pass in the third quarter.
Josue Zamora had two interceptions and a pair of sacks for Westfield State.
