BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

The Orono Health Association and Penobchess will hold a six-round FIDE Action chess tournament starting at 9 a.m. Saturday, July 21, in the Orono Community House on Benoch Road. The rounds will occur every hour with a half-hour break for lunch.

International master Georgi Temoshenko from Kiev won first place in the Canadian Open in Edmundston, New Brunswick with the amazing score of 8 1/2 to 1 1/2. Georgi allowed draws to his closest-rated players, Gordan Taylor, Danny Kopec and Robert Hamilton. He collected $2,000 for 10 days of work and may try again in the United States Open in August in Jacksonville.

Temoshenko is a student in the Physical Education Institute in Moscow, where he is specializing in chess.

Second place went to Canadian National Master Robert Hamilton, who was part of a New Brunswick team that played the Bangor Club a few years ago, before he moved to Ontario. Hamilton drew with international master Danny Kopec and Timoshenko, winning the $1,000 second prize. He is an FIDE master.

Orono’s international master, Kopec, finished third with 7 1/2-2 1/2, taking the $800 prize. Taylor finished fourth.

Kopec gave a simultaneous exhibition allowing only one draw for more than 20 games. Each contestant against Kopec was allowed to choose his color.

The tournament was organized by a committee headed by Michel Gagne, who provided good conditions and enough prizes so that about 60 percent of players won something.

The tournament was directed by Hector Grant and Jacques Somany.

White sacrifices the knight and rook to achieve checkmate. The play goes: 1.NH4-g6 f7xg6, 2.Rd7xg7+ Kg8xg7, 3.e5-e6!+ Kg7-g8, 4.Qf6-g6 Checkmate! The game that had this ending was played in Poznan in 1961 between Grynszpan (White) and Kaminski. While few have heard of Grynszpan, he deserves to be remembered for this beautiful complicated ending. He had already sacked a knight to reach this position and then sacked another knight and a rook to set up the winning discovery check.
