BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I was greatly saddened by the news that Brewer is discontinuing the CANUSA Games. I can understand the decision from a financial point but what bothered me most was the statement made by Kenneth Hanscom, director of parks and recreation: “The changing lifestyles of today’s families … resulted in the games not seeing the number of participants of years past.”

What a sad commentary on our society that something as wonderful as the games would have to be done away with. What is happening to our families? Children and parents need to spend more time participating in activities like the games rather than idle hours in front of video games, recorded messages to one another on machines and microwaveable dinners alone in front of a TV. You would think that keeping the games going might help in promoting family values and community spirit.

Maybe including Bangor citizens or others from surrounding communities would increase participation. Financial support from area businesses could also be an option. I truly feel more thought should be put into this before the book is closed on this event forever.

We hope some day to return to Bangor-Brewer and I would fully support my five children in participating in the CANUSA Games. Michelle (Lee) Thomas 1983 CANUSA torch runner Marion, Iowa
