Student pleads guilty to charges in dorm fire

BANGOR — A former University of Maine student charged with arson in connection with a $250,000 dormitory fire last year pleaded guilty Thursday to lesser charges.

Shane Sullivan, 20, of South Portland, pleaded guilty to reckless conduct, failure to report a dangerous fire and tampering with a fire alarm.

Sullivan, who appeared in Penobscot County Superior Court, was given a six-month sentence with all but 15 days suspended. He was also ordered to pay a $250 fine and up to $5,000 in restitution and to spend a year on probation.

No one was injured in the Nov. 12 fire at Somerset Hall, but 146 students were displaced from their dormitory rooms.

Sullivan has also been expelled from the university.
