Falmouth freshman already a chess whiz

BANGOR — Just for the record, I won’t be “Searching for Bobby Fischer” at the state individual chess tournaments on Saturday. I’m not expecting the reclusive Fischer to show up for the matches at John Bapst in Bangor.

Josh Waitzkin, the movie’s subject and someday possible successor to Fischer as world chess champion, probably won’t be there either. With a rating of 2,494 this year, Waitzkin wouldn’t find a lot of competition in Maine.

John Bapst coach and tournament organizer Michael Schaab told me Monday, however, that there were probably a couple of Maine youngsters with ratings in the 1,400s. Certainly there are adults with higher ratings. And then there’s Aaron.

Aaron Lewis of Falmouth is a freshman who won the high school individual titles in both the seventh and eighth grades. Before that he won three elementary titles.

His rating in January was 1,946, according to a chess publication which keeps track of such things. He has studied with Danny Kopec, an international master who used to live in Maine.

Lewis is one of the players I hope to watch on Saturday. Those who follow chess expect him to continue racking up wins.
