SAN DIEGO – The America’s Cup came up with another dubious distinction on Tuesday when one race was postponed because the wind was blowing too hard and the second race was called off when the wind dropped to practically nothing.
It was the first time since multiple challenges began in 1970 that such extremes have visited the race courses on the same day.
With a storm lashing the area, the challenger finals race between oneAustralia and Team New Zealand’s Black Magic 1 was postponed at 11 a.m. because of wind exceeding 22 knots and sea swells of 5 feet.
The defenders were more eager to get in the scheduled race between Young America and Mighty Mary because weather problems are eating into the reserve days.
But by 3 p.m., the latest the race could start, the yachts were left bobbing in only 2 knots of wind.
Both races were rescheduled for Wednesday, with the forecast calling for winds of 10-12 knots.
The carbon-fiber racing yachts are built to race in winds of 6-16 knots.
Black Magic 1 leads the best-of-9 challenger series 4-1 and needs one more victory to clinch a spot in the America’s Cup finals.
The Mighty Mary-Young America winner will take the lead in the three-boat defender finals. Currently, Mighty Mary, Young America and Stars & Stripes have three points apiece.
The defender finals originally were scheduled to end by Saturday. Now, the best-case scenario is that one boat will be eliminated on Saturday and a winner will be determined on Sunday.
But if the 12-race, round-robin series ends in a three-way tie, and barring further weather delays, Young America and Mighty Mary would have a sudden-death sailoff next Tuesday. Stars & Stripes would drop out because it entered the round in third place.
It was the third day in a week that the wind didn’t cooperate. Last Wednesday, the wind died well before the time limits expired. On Sunday, there was too much wind.
