University of Maine senior winger Don Richardson has quit the team citing personal reasons.

Richardson had posted an assist in four games this season but was a healthy scratch for this past weekend’s victories over Northeastern and Boston University.

The University of Vermont transfer had two goals and six assists in an injury-marred 30-game career at Maine. The five-foot-five Richardson missed six weeks last year with a broken thumb.

Richardson couldn’t be reached for comment.

“It’s sad. We all respected Donny and we all liked him. He wasn’t having fun this year and if your heart isn’t into it, you shouldn’t be here,” said senior left winger and captain Chris Heisten. “He didn’t want to be a distraction for the team. He’s a good kid and I wish him the best of luck.”

Senior center Tommy Reimann, Richardson’s roommate, said “He has a tough school year. He’s a business major and he has to take 18 credit hours next semester [to graduate]. He felt he couldn’t get it done.

“He’s 23 years old and he wasn’t planning on playing hockey next year anyway. He got to the point he couldn’t take it any more,” added Reimann.

Maine coach Tim Whitehead said it was “unfortunate.

“I really like Donny and I respect him as a player and as a person. He made a decision that he had to concentrate on another part of his life, specifically his academics,” said Whitehead.
