UM baseball takes twinbill

BALTIMORE – The University of Maine baseball team opened its 2001 season in style on Sunday, posting a doubleheader sweep over Coppin State. The Black Bears earned a 23-2 win in the first game and prevailed 8-6 in the second.

In the first game, the Black Bears broke open a 3-0 game when junior Mike Ross and sophomore Joe Drapeau bashed back-to-back homers in the second inning.

Drapeau finished with four RBIs for the Bears while Ross, Alain Picard and Pat Tobin each drove in three. Pitcher Mike MacDonald struck out five and walked just one while allowing one hit before getting relief help in the sixth.

In the second game, Simon Stoner struck out two and allowed three hits while earning the win in a designated short starting assignment that lasted a predetermined two innings.

Women’s basketball

NYU 64, Bowdoin 60

At Coles Sports Center in New York City, the Violets rushed out to a 39-25 lead at the half, held off a Bowdoin rally after intermission and advanced to the final eight of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament.

Bowdoin outrebounded NYU 47-21 but was not able to parlay that advantage into a win.
