Turkey Trot could see high attendance Brewer road race to be held Sunday

BREWER – Over the years, Dave Jeffrey has answered just about every question that can be posed to the race director of one of the area’s most popular road races.

And over the years, very few of Jeffrey’s answers have changed. That’s because the Turkey Trot 5K, which will be held for the 21st year on Sunday, doesn’t change, either.

Jeffrey knows there are several factors that have contributed to the success of the race, which serves as a fund-raiser for Brewer High School’s sophomore class.

“[People enter] because they can win stuff, because it’s the last race of the year, because it’s become a checkmark on everybody’s calendar,” Jeffrey said. “They [pencil] it in early, and they circle it, and they come back because they enjoy it.”

This year’s Turkey Trot festivities begin at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, with a 1-mile fun run for children. The 5K race will begin at 1 p.m. The races begin and end at Brewer High School.

People heading toward Brewer ought to take note of some traffic changes: the Interstate ramp to Parkway South will close at about noon, and Parkway South itself will close to traffic at about 12:15.

Up for grabs will be 50 turkeys that will be presented to various age, team and category winners, and 150 more prizes will be awarded in random drawings. The big drawing: One dollar from each entry will be used to “stuff” a turkey, and one lucky runner will take the cash prize home.

That prize may be close to $600 this year, Jeffrey said.

Jeffrey said pre-registrations indicate that this year’s race might set an all-time attendance record. More than 360 runners have registered for the 5K, and another 80 or so have signed up for the 1-miler. The combined record is 565.

Race-day registration will begin at 10:30 a.m.
