‘Langoliers’ filming didn’t halt BIA activity

BANGOR — Bangor International Airport may seem deserted in “The Langoliers,” but flights took off and landed on schedule while the made-for-TV miniseries was being shot, the airport manager said Monday.

Bangor International, a former Air Force base that now serves as a major refueling point for charter flights to Europe, was the setting for much of the two-part drama that concluded with a two-hour episode Monday night on ABC.

Written by horror writer Stephen King, who lives in Bangor, the story develops as 10 passengers aboard a red-eye flight from Los Angeles land at the airport and find it deserted.

Bob Ziegelaar, the airport manager, recalled that it wasn’t easy for the film crew to give the airport a feeling of emptiness while business around the set went on as usual.

“It was rather complicated and somewhat painful at times. They shot a lot after hours, as much as they could,” he said. At times, the crew used electronic lighting to make it look like daylight.

“We had areas of the terminal cordoned off during slow times,” Ziegelaar said. “There were always people milling around on the edges of the set. Business was never interrupted,” he said, noting that the filming took place last summer, during the airport’s busiest season.

Inside the terminal, a lobster tank and a sign touting the state’s apple harvest add to the Maine ambiance.

The film, directed by Tom Holland, is based on a King novella from his 1990 collection, “Four Past Midnight.”

Ziegelaar acknowledged that the movie is giving the airport its 15 minutes of fame.

“I’m not sure if it will help the tourism sector or not,” he said.
