Matt Kinney, ace pitcher for Bangor High School and the Bangor American Legion baseball team, appeared to be leaning toward finishing his summer Legion season Friday night.
Saturday is the deadline for the Boston Red Sox sixth-round draft pick to either sign with Boston or finish his Legion season.
If he opts to play Legion ball, he won’t be able to negotiate with the Red Sox until his Legion season is over. Bangor is scheduled to play a doubleheader at Calais Saturday.
Kinney said Thursday night he expected to get another offer from Boston Friday, based on the fact the Sox signed fifth-round pick Steven Lomasney Thursday.
The Boston Globe reported Friday that Lomasney, a high school catcher from Peabody, Mass., received a $350,000 package that included full tuition to Boston College.
Kinney indicated he wanted to receive a package close to Lomasney’s.
Jeff Kinney, Matt’s father, hinted early Friday evening that Matt would finish his Legion season and then talk with Boston again.
Kinney, who has a full baseball scholarship to the University of Maine, will have to decide between school and the pros.
