BANGOR DAILY NEWS (BANGOR, MAINE

I have a new contender for my GR (Get Real) list of unbelievable baloney in television commercials. At the top of the current list are the two productions by Champion, our eminently benevolent and environmentally concerned paper company. I have no idea how many acres the company owns, but I get all warm and mushy inside when I learn that they aren’t going to clearcut two parcels of land, one of 30 acres and the other with 55. The soft, intimate voice of the announcer, the lovely scenery and dulcet background music are profoundly touching.

My only problem with the whole thing is that, somewhere in the back of my mind, I have the idea that there are some rules against clearcutting up to the edge of streams anyway. Maybe if they would add a little chorus by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, such irreverent thoughts wouldn’t occur to me. Frank Myers Dover-Foxcroft
