ORONO – The foul weather and a dearth of candidates in the Town Council race kept voters from going to the polls Tuesday, according to Registrar of Voters Susan Hart.
Only 253 ballots were cast and all four incumbents were re-elected, she reported an hour after the polls closed.
School committee members Arthur “Jim” Artesani and Carolyn Leick easily beat challengers Lynne M. Gagnon and Frances Mary Neubauer. Artesani received 188 votes, while Leick got 162. Neubauer came in third with 72 votes and 69 people cast ballots for Gagnon.
Nicolas Houtman and Bryan Pearce were unopposed in their bids for second three-year terms on the council. Houtman got 262 votes, while Pearce received 218.
The annual municipal election generated little interest this year. Outside of town officials and the high school students who organized the event, less than a handful of citizens attended last week’s candidates’ forum.
Last year, 631 voters went to the polls. Hart said that turnout was “very average” for the town’s municipal election, which is held during a two-week-long student break at the University of Maine.
