Crusaders edge Ponies 15-14

BANGOR – The John Bapst Crusaders used a strong defensive stand to beat the Foxcroft Academy Ponies 15-14 in high school football action Saturday night at Camerson Stadium.

Mike Aldrich’s interception with 1:42 left in the fourth quarter helped secure the Bapst victory.

Bapst held Foxcroft scoreless for three quarters and broke up a crucial two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter.

Mike Aldrich opened the Bapst scoring with a one-yard rush and Jake Dunton added the other powering one in from two yards out. Mike Brockett’s conversion on the Dunton touchdown gave the Crusaders the lead which was held by two strong defensive stands.

Leading the defensive charge for Bapst was senior linebacker Billy Rushmore with 15 tackles. Nick Blaylock led the Crusader rushing attack with 122 yards on 22 attempts.

For Foxcroft, senior tight end Adam Peterson connected on a 16-yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter from quarterback Brock Hartford. A Brent Slater 68-yard punt return set up tailback Ben Preston’s one-yard touchdown run.

Dexter 12, MCI 7

At Dexter, Brad Sherwood fed the Tigers offensive appetite with his involvement in two touchdowns in the Tigers’ win over Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield.

The senior quarterback ran 16 yards for the game-winning touchdown in collecting 83 rushing yards on eight carries, and hooked up with Josh Annis for a 26-yard scoring pass. Sherwood completed seven of 17 passing attempts for 83 yards, and made a key fourth-quarter interception which set up Dexter’s winning score.

Dexter senior running back Brent Cunningham ground out 114 yards on 23 carries, and had a hand in 11 tackles, including five solos and one of the Tigers’ two sacks. Sophomore Jim Hartford led the defense with 16 tackles, three solo, as the Tigers recovered two Huskie fumbles and snagged two interceptions.

MCI’s Nick Lowe gave the Huskies the tie with his first-quarter eight-yard pass to Dan Mack. Dave Heaton completed the point-after attempt.

At Winslow, sophomore tailback Peter Cheesman powered the Black Raiders with 66 yards on 11 carries and two touchdowns over the Trojans.

Chad Sawyer led the ground attack with 120 yards, including an 84-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Ruben Lemlin was eight of 12 for 130 yards. He connected with Joel Fernald for two touchdowns from 11 and seven yards out. Randy Loubier and Alan Boucheur also added scores on runs from 14 and one yards out, respectively.

Mattanawcook 47, Rockland 0

At Rockland, the Mattanawcook Academy defense picked off five passes, returning two of them for touchdowns, and also had a fumble recovery as Mattanawcook triumphed.

Sophomore cornerback Todd Chessie, making his first start, intercepted three passes and returned one 32 yards for a score.

Linebacker Jon Tardif had the other interception return for a touchdown as he rambled 40 yards.

Leroy Cox scored a pair of touchdowns on a 15-yard run and a 60-yard punt return.

Jon Smith scored on an eight-yard run to open the scoring and he finished with 71 yards on 14 carries. Jarrod Lane caught a 10-yard TD pass from Brian Greenlaw and kicked a 23-yard field goal.

Junior middle linebacker Andy Hedrich was in on 24 tackles for Rockland and senior cornerback Mike Robishaw made 12 tackles. Aaron Weaver rushed for 74 yards on 11 carries.

At Bucksport Friday night, Josh Howes hauled in two touchdown passes from Adam Greenlaw to lead the Minutemen’s scoring, including a one-yarder in an explosive fourth quarter.

Howes caught a 21-yard pass from Greenlaw on his third-quarter score. B.J. Jandreau found the end zone twice, first on a four-yard run, and later on a 67-yard punt return. Shaun Illingworth scored on a 19-yard run, and Travis Cummings claimed a touchdown on a 12-yard run. Joe Frost converted on four out of five point-after attempts.

For Bucksport, Chris Soper scored on a nine-yard run. Cory Nightengale missed the extra point attempt. David Gross led the way defensively with 10 solo tackles. Buddy Clement added seven solo tackles, and Ryan Pelkey and Zach Adams each had six solo tackles.
