WATERVILLE – The Maine Athletic Conference championship game has been set as the No. 1 University of Maine-Farmington Beavers defeated No. 4 Husson 4-1 and No. 3 Thomas beat the No. 2 University of New England 5-0 in men’s soccer action.
The championship game will be held at Thomas College 11 a.m. Sunday.
In the first game, Dennis Harmon scored twice to pace the 13-1 Beavers. Aaron Berthiaume and Jamie Beaudoin each scored goals. Robin Gronuold had two assists and Gary Marden added an assist. Joshua Verville and Chris Roy combined to make seven saves on nine shots.
Kevin Burton scored the lone goal for the Braves off an Adam Heaslewood assist. Ben Masterson made seven saves on 11 shots. The Braves end at 12-5.
In the second game, Chris Parson helped Thomas pull off the slight upset by scoring four goals. He notched a hat trick in the first half to put the 10-8 Terriers up 3-0. Jahma Charles added an insurance goal in the second half.
Dyke Lawrence earned the shutout for the winners with two saves.
Scott Thompson made five saves for UNE, now 7-7-1.
Women’s soccer
MAC tourney begins today
The women’s Maine Athletic Conference soccer semi-finals will get under way today at 11 a.m. at Thomas College. The first game will pit No. 3 St. Joseph’s against No. 2 UMaine-Presque Isle. Following that game, No. 4 UMaine-Farmington will try to knock of top-seeded University of New England at 1:30 p.m.
Towson State 3, Maine 1 (2OT)
At Towson, Md., Courtney McClelland and Ashlee Douglas each scored overtime goals and had assists to lift the Tigers to their first North Atlantic Conference victory.
The Black Bears drew first blood when junior Kristen Adami scored off a Shannon Peterson pass at 37:59 of the first period.
The Tigers bounced back with a goal from Jessica Graham. Alyson Reade made five saves on 16 shots as Towson improved to 3-10 overall and 1-3-1 in the NAC.
Jennifer Terpolilli and Shelia Fenderson combined to make 11 saves on 21 shots as Maine drops to 3-11 and 0-5 in the NAC.
