ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. – Ryan Thurber scored on two direct kicks in a driving rain to lead fifth-ranked Unity College to a first-round upset in the National Small College Athletic Association’s national soccer tournament Thursday.
“The field was waterlogged,” Coach Gary Zane said following his team’s 3-2 victory over No. 4 Warren Wilson College of Asheville, N.C. “It took away some of their speed.”
Unity will play Centenary College from New Jersey in a 2 p.m. semifinal today and will play at least one more game beyond that, Zane said.
Thurber scored in the first and second halves while Derek Zeruk scored Unity’s other goal late in the first half off a feed from Chris Iller.
Goalie Mike Ackerman stopped 10 of Wilson College’s 21 shots to preserve the victory. Don Farlin scored both Wilson goals.
